A shootout outside a synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur left a police officer injured and the 29-year-old suspect in critical condition.
A violent confrontation unfolded outside a synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, on Sunday evening as worshippers gathered to observe Yom Kippur, one of the most sacred days in the Jewish calendar. The exchange of gunfire resulted in severe injuries to a responding police officer and left the suspected shooter in critical condition at a regional medical facility.
Authorities identified the injured law enforcement official as Constable Jeff Smith of the Belleville Police Service. According to Belleville Police Service Deputy Chief Sheri Meeks, Constable Smith sustained significant injuries during the gunfight and faces a long recovery process, though he is currently making encouraging progress.
The suspect was identified by officials as 29-year-old Sean Ward. Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), stated that Ward was in life-threatening condition following the incident. Investigators noted that Ward sustained multiple gunshot wounds from officers at the scene and was treated at Kingston General Hospital, where both the suspect and Constable Smith were transported.
According to preliminary findings detailed by the SIU, the incident began just after 7 p.m. when Ward arrived outside the Son of Jacob Synagogue driving a black pickup truck. Investigators report that Ward was armed with a shotgun and opened fire on Constable Smith, who was already at the location in an unmarked police vehicle. Constable Smith returned fire, and a second officer subsequently arrived and joined in discharging their weapon at the suspect.
The resulting shootout left extensive property damage in the surrounding area. SIU representatives noted that preliminary estimates suggest between 20 and 30 rounds were fired during the exchange, leaving dozens of bullet holes in the street, shattered vehicle windows, and damage to nearby residential homes.
Synagogue president Doug Weddum told the National Post that the distinctive stained glass windows decorating the exterior of the house of worship were heavily peppered with bullets during the attack.
Political leaders swiftly condemned the violence and expressed support for the affected community and first responders. Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that he was disgusted by the shooting and expected those responsible to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Ford emphasized that the Jewish community in Belleville and across Ontario has every right to gather and worship safely and without fear.
Prime Minister Mark Carney also addressed the incident on social media, stressing that Jewish citizens must be able to live and worship freely and openly. He affirmed that Canada's federal government will utilize all available resources to support law enforcement agencies in ensuring accountability for the perpetrator.
As the investigation continues, authorities have encouraged anyone with relevant information to assist the SIU and local law enforcement as they piece together the full sequence of events surrounding the shooting.
